Theology on the Green - Catholicism in Modern Day America - July 22, 2025
On July 22, 2025, the Spirit and Light Lifelong Learning Committee sponsored a presentation on "Christian Nationalism" by our guest speaker, Bill Cavanaugh, at St. Giles Campus.
Christian Nationalism appears to be on the rise in the United States and elsewhere in the world. What is it and what are its varieties? Where does it come from? Should Christians be nationalists? Is secular nationalism less dangerous than religious nationalism? Bill Cavanaugh addressed these questions and more in an interactive talk.
Bill Cavanaugh is Professor of Catholic Studies and Director of the Center for World Catholicism and Intercultural Theology at DePaul University in Chicago. His degrees are from the universities of Notre Dame, Cambridge, and Duke. He is author of nine books and editor of eight more, as well as editor of the journal Modern Theology. He has lectured on six continents, and his work has been published in 19 languages.
