The Archdiocese of Chicago requires all volunteers to have background checks through Virtus.
What are the Virtus® Programs? - The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People requires that each employee and/or volunteer within every parish be trained and screened if they have contact with or minister to children. The program in the Archdiocese of Chicago is called VIRTUS or Protecting God’s Children for Adults.
About the VIRTUS Programs
Our Mission - To educate and empower everyone (individually and collectively) to ensure optimally safe environments for children and the vulnerable.
Our programs are designed to help prevent wrongdoing and promote "rightdoing" within organizations. The VIRTUS programs empower organizations and people to take action as safe adults and improve the lives of everyone with whom they interact within the Church and other organizations.
The VIRTUS programs were created in 1998 by The National Catholic Risk Retention Group, Inc. (National Catholic). Since its inception, the VIRTUS programs continue to evolve to go above and beyond the needs of organizations to safeguard ministries and people.
Over 6 million adults have been trained through our Protecting God's Children Program, and millions of youth have been trained in the Empowering God's Children Program.
We work with dioceses, eparchies and religious communities, along with other organizations and schools.
