Thank You for the Support for the Ascension and St. Edmund Parish Gardens - August 2026

BULLETIN UPDATE ON AUGUST 30, 2026 - Tomatoes were abundant in the Ascension garden this week. Peppers and summer squash were also producing well. An empty bed was re-seeded with salad turnips, and we're looking forward to a fall crop next month. The zinnias are in bloom and continue to attract butterflies and other pollinators.

Volunteers are welcome to help in the garden every Tuesday evening beginning at 5:30 PM. Fresh produce can also be dropped off at the Ascension Parish Center parking lot on Tuesdays, beginning at 5:30 PM, and will be added to our donation to the St. Simon of Cyrene Food Pantry.

This week we received a mystery item as a donation! Further investigation revealed it was a fruit commonly known as cucamelon (a.k.a. Mexican miniature watermelon, Mexican sour gherkin, mouse melon). The fruit is the size of a grape and tastes like a cucumber. There is always something new in the garden!

BULLETIN UPDATE ON AUGUST 23, 2026 - That's not an empty garden bed at the Third Day Garden. That is a bed full of seeds for the autumn greens. The green beans harvest was plentiful, but it had reached its end. It was time to pull those and plant something else.

At the Ascension garden, lots of beans, peppers and tomatoes were harvested on Tuesday. The summer rains and dedicated waterers are keeping our beds productive. BULLETIN UPDATE ON AUGUST 16, 2026 - The Third Day Garden at St. Edmund harvested beans, cucumbers, and okra again. We'll have the beans for one more harvest, and then we'll plant greens for the rest of the season. The okra is producing more every week. Thank you to our home gardeners with okra plots. The gardeners harvest on Wednesday morning at 9:00 AM and take the produce directly to the Beyond Hunger Food Pantry. Please come join the harvest, or just stop by to sit and enjoy the garden.

The Ascension Garden withstood Tuesday morning’s severe storms and enjoyed a large harvest with many garden donations. Tomatoes, peppers, and cucumbers led the way. On Tuesdays beginning at 5:30 PM, fresh produce donations may be dropped off at the Ascension Susan Fleming Garden. We welcome help with weeding and picking the produce.

BULLETIN UPDATE ON AUGUST 9, 2026 - At the Ascension Garden, this week, our peppers began producing very well, but our cucumber bed is struggling with some sort of leaf blight. Tomato harvesting should begin in earnest next week. If you are considering volunteering, this Tuesday at 5:30 PM would be ideal. Our garden raises flowers too. On Tuesdays beginning at 5:30 PM, fresh produce donations may be dropped off at the Ascension Parish Center parking lot.
