Deportation - Deportations have become even more concerning for the families that we have resettled, especially those who have been in the United States less than two years. Migrants who have been here less that 2 years are eligible for expedited removal. Meaning that they lose the opportunity for some protections that would otherwise be available to them.
In the latest cases in Chicago some migrants usually those without legal representation at a court hearing are met outside the courthouse by ICE officers and taken to detention. Normally these people would have been given time to locate an attorney. Once in detention it is difficult to track down the person and those eligible for expedited removal may be deported. This can happen without their right to appeal. Due process that everyone has enjoyed is not always followed.
We are working hard to be sure our families have active asylum cases and legal representation when they go to court to defend their claim. But even with that there is no guarantee that they will be protected. Recently a woman who is a widow with two small children had a court hearing and the outcome was not assured. At the last minute her court date was continued to late in 2026. There was a collective sigh of relief.
As you can imagine the anxiety for our families is high. Your donations have been so helpful in combating these practices. We continue to need donations for our Legal Defense Fund. Your prayers are also important. Thank you all for both of these.
Please continue to pray for our beloved migrant brothers and sisters.
