As the Church welcomes Pope Leo XIV, many are already noting his quiet strength and pastoral heart. Though it is early in his papacy, one thing I think stands out: his emphasis on “returning to the heart of the Gospel – Christ’s mercy and mission.” I recall that in his first public address, he called on Catholics everywhere to be “BUILDERS of BRIDGES, NOT WALLS,” echoing a deep desire for unity, simplicity and authentic Christian witness in a complicated world. And might I add what wisdom for us to follow as we continue to work into a new reality in our Church and with our ongoing work of unification in our new parish configurations! Pope Leo’s leadership invites us to refocus on what matters most: prayer, compassion and the courage to live our faith boldly but humbly.
At this time of new beginnings, I also want to joyfully extend our prayers and best wishes to many who have already graduated and those who are graduating this week. Congratulations to all from grammar school to post graduate. Your hard work, perseverance, and growth are worth celebrating. Whether you are stepping into a new school, a new job, or the next chapter of your life, know that your parish family is praying for you. As Pope Leo XIV recently said, “The Church is not a museum of saints, but a school of disciples. Keep learning, keep going, and keep Christ at the center.” Those are wise words for all of us, but especially for those who are beginning a new journey.
Finally, as we all continue walking this path together, let’s remember that coming to Mass each week grounds us in that mission. In the midst of life’s business and uncertainty, the Eucharist gives us clarity and strength and direction. It is where we are reminded of who we are and WHOSE WE ARE! And if I may add a gentle word about how we present ourselves at Mass. Summer is upon us. While I know that God looks at the heart, the way we dress reflects our respect for the sacred and for one another. Like dressing for a special occasion, our outward appearance can express the value we place on what we are doing – gathering as a community before the Lord. YOU being here at Mass is most important to me. However, might we strive during these summer months to be intentional and reverent in all things, inside and out.
Have a safe and blessed week ahead.
With you a Christian. For you a priest.
