A Modern Day Posada - Non-Parish Event of Interest
An Evening of Light, Love and Solidarity, A Modern Day Posada
Friday, December 19 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM
At SWOP- Southwest Organizing Project - 2558 W. 63rd Street
We will gather together on Friday night, December 19 at 6:00 PM with our brothers and sisters from SWOP, from St. Rita’s, and from other United Power groups to re-enact the holy family’s search for shelter (a posada), to celebrate the work we have done together to create homes and rebuild neighborhoods, and to be a source of light, love, and solidarity in this holiday season.
Two thousand years ago, Mary and Joseph were strangers in a strange land. They needed someone to welcome them; they needed safety; they needed shelter. Two thousand years later, as we enter the season of Advent, so many in our midst need homes, need safety, and need to be reminded that they are welcome here.
We will walk, carrying light, praying, and singing songs. We will stop at homes to re-enact the holy family’s search for shelter. The homes that we will visit will be “Reclaiming Homes” – formerly vacant buildings rehabbed by United Power and SWOP and now owned by hard-working families. We will deliver gifts, receive gifts, and celebrate together. We will do this to remind ourselves that we have all been strangers in a strange land.
Come be part of a special evening – spreading the light of Christmas – committing ourselves to creating the kingdom of God on earth – recommitting to welcoming all. It will be fun; it will be energizing; it will make a difference. We are called to be sources of love, light, and solidarity.
