New Year! New Location! - Adding to the good news for 2026 (after the announcement of our move to Saint Bernardine School), we will be moving in another family during the first week of January. We took a short break from adding new families to give our very hard-working volunteers time to celebrate the holidays with their families. Our new family will be a refugee rather than an asylum applicant. The family is from Angola whose native language is Portuguese and not Spanish. Always more to learn.
In the interim, because of generous donations of gift cards, we were able to give our existing families Christmas gift cards to Aldi and Walmart. With a little extra, they were able to buy gifts for their children.
We have also been able to support other families who have been mostly independent, but have fallen on harder times due to Operation Midway Blitz which made them afraid to go to work. Or, in some cases, due to the colder weather, jobs are not available, i.e. landscape jobs. It is much easier to support a family short term so they can keep their current apartment rather than being evicted and then trying to find another. Again, we are grateful for your generosity in making this support possible.
After moving our shelves, tables, and supplies, our plan is to start receiving donations and organizing the rooms (“free stores”) on Monday, January 12 and Monday, January 19. We will open once again to migrants and immigrants on Tuesday, January 20.
In the meantime, we continue to distribute coats, blankets, and winter gear at Saint Edmund. Thank you to everyone who has donated to this very acute need!
