Celebrating 4th of July - E Pluribus Unum - Our country’s motto as it appears on the great seal of the United States: E Pluribus Unum, translated to “out of many, one” has great significance for our migrant families. No one wants to leave their home, and for 250 years, the United States has been a place where all people were welcome, especially those forced to leave their homes, their families, their work. That is being challenged now with closed borders, asylum and work permit applications slowed close to a standstill. Added to that are huge fees and penalties for the most basic applications through the Department of Homeland Security.

But for the 40 or so volunteers marching in the Oak Park 4th of July parade, it was clear that they all wanted to return to an even better, more welcoming immigration system. Compassionate immigration reform. With signs, flags and chanting slogans like “Say it loud, say it clear, Immigrants are welcome here!” - those marching were greeted with affirming applause from the crowds as they marched along.

The Migrant Ministry of the Catholic Community of Oak Park has been welcoming families since 2022, thanks to your help. We plan to continue.
