Roadblocks for our Migrant Families - It seems like there are new roadblocks for our migrant families every few weeks. Especially difficult are the new fees that have been added to some applications that were once free. Among the most difficult one is the fee added to the employment authorization documents. This is the document that allows the migrant to receive a social security card and pursue job opportunities.
In most cases, the initial application that was once free now costs $560 and that fee can be much higher depending on certain statuses. For people arriving with very little, this is a huge amount. Plus, there are restrictions on how it can be paid. Our Immigration Support Services is working hard to help those who arrive at Centro San Bernadino on Tuesday mornings to complete these applications.
The approval period has been drastically reduced, and it takes many months for the application to be processed. One man who has been working for ten years to get his final citizenship documents was notified that his work authorization had ended. This is a man with a thriving business employing many other people.
There is now a fee of $100 to submit an asylum application and then an annual renewal fee as well. All of these present roadblocks to our brothers and sisters, especially those trying to navigate this alone. This is very sad and frustrating to our Catholic Community that is trying to support the newcomer. We do appreciate the support that all of you have provided. We ask you all to continue to pray and work for compassionate immigration reform. Soon, please.
Thank you for your support of the Migrant Ministry. Donations are accepted on Mondays from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM at the former Saint Bernardine School, 815 Elgin in Forest Park. We are now accepting only spring and summer clothing, but HAVE A GREAT NEED FOR BLANKETS, SHEETS, AND TOWELS.
