Today the Catholic Church is facing a significant challenge; the shortage of men entering the seminary and women answering the call to religious life. There are many reasons for this, such as modern culture offering many opportunities and distractions along with the pressure to choose careers that guarantee financial success or personal fulfillment. Many young people might never have even thought that God could be calling them toward a different path in life.
But there is another question worth asking ourselves. HAVE WE EVER ASKED ANYONE? Have you ever said to a son, grandson, or a young person you admire and feel has special gifts, “Have you ever thought about becoming a priest, a sister, a brother, or a deacon? I believe that you have those skills and gifts.”
For many priests and religious, the first spark of their vocation came because someone asked them. They saw something in them and then simply asked the question.
That was true for me. I was an aide to a woman teaching Religious Education to fifth graders. After a few years of assisting her, she asked me the question. Here I am 43 years later, your pastor. I will always be grateful to Berni for asking me that question and planting that seed.
We encourage young people to become teachers, doctors, nurses, firefighters, or business leaders. We should be just as willing to encourage them to consider serving Christ in His Church. A vocation is not about giving up life; it is about discovering the life God has prepared for us. The Church needs joyful, compassionate, faith-filled leaders to preach the gospel, celebrate the sacraments, teach the faith, and serve God’s people with generous hearts.
Perhaps the Holy Spirit is calling someone you know, and your invitation might just be the gentle nudge they need to begin asking, “Lord, what do you want me to do with my life?” Sometimes one simple question can change a life and bless countless others.
That simple question changed and blessed my life!
Thanks to all who contributed to my budget deficit appeal. Your generosity made a difference. While we still have a shortfall, you have made an impact in moving closer to our goal.
Have a safe and good week ahead.
With you a Christian, for you, a priest.
