I would like to share with members of both parish communities a report that is overdue. If you recall, in 2024 we turned our attention to the future with the following in mind: the sustainability of our faith communities, our mission and ministerial needs, growth opportunities, and the best use of our resources. The first step required that we learn more about our campuses - how they are being used, operational costs, and capital needs. This led to the formation of Multi-Site Review Committees for each parish. The committees were comprised of parishioners from each worship site who generously gave their time over the course of many months. They worked closely with our Operations Directors and a consultant from the Archdiocese. I would like to thank them on behalf of our parishes for all their hard work.
Back in September and October, both Multi-Site Review Committees presented what they learned to each parish community in a town hall meeting which was live streamed. Both their reports and the live streamed videos are available on each parish website. Parishioners were able to offer feedback and ask questions following the presentations. As the work of the Multi-Site Review Committees was nearing completion, they along with the Pastoral Councils from each parish were brought together for group sharing and to discuss next steps in the process. Some recommendations were made but no final decisions.
There was a desire to explore how both parishes can uphold our mission while being good stewards of our resources. This next phase will extend through June. Right now, we are working closely with our leadership groups to first establish priorities for the next few months. We will be looking at how ministry and mission can be supported with finances, facility usage, and structure. As phase two moves along, you can expect ongoing communication, especially if any conclusions and decisions are made. The goal is to develop and share a plan for the start of the new f iscal year beginning July 1.
May God guide us on this journey and may our actions continue to reflect his Kingdom through the work of our parishes as the Catholic Community of Oak Park and Our Neighbors. Remember our Advent theme was to “make room for hope." Our world and our communities need each one of us more than ever. Let us continue to serve one another so that every person we encounter feels a sense of welcome and belonging. Thank you for keeping hope alive by your support and all that you do.
Congratulations to all our young students in second grade who, in both parishes, made First Reconciliation this past week. I reminded the children that the sacrament was not simply pointing out the times we all sin, but rather, despite our human weaknesses and faults, God still loves us and always wants us to live in and follow the love and light of Jesus. It was a beautiful experience for the children and their parents. There is a peace and grace that come from the ritual of examining our conscience, asking forgiveness and hearing the words of absolution said by the priest. Lent is coming and it is the perfect time to plan to join us for the Sacrament of Reconciliation when it is offered.
The next big step for these young students - First Communion! Congratulations to all! See you at Mass!
